A Life Well Lived: Remembering Al Lopez
Some people leave behind a title. Others leave behind a legacy.
For more than six decades, Al Lopez was part of the Spartan Tool story. From his first day in 1961 until his retirement in 2023, Al dedicated 62 years to helping build relationships, support customers, and represent Spartan Tool with integrity.
On July 7, 2026, we lost a beloved member of our Spartan family. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate an extraordinary life and the lasting impact he had on our company, our customers, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Where It All Began
In 1961, Al had just graduated from college, recently married, and was looking for a career that would allow him to build a future for his family. He accepted a job in accounting at Conco Engineering Works in Mendota, Illinois, earning $100 a week. At the time, he thought, "You can't get any better than that."
When Conco became Spartan Tool a few years later, company leadership recognized something special in Al and invited him to join the inside sales team. It wasn't long before another opportunity came his way. Just a year later, he was asked to open Spartan Tool's warehouse in New York. What was expected to be a new challenge became a decade-long adventure. After ten successful years in New York, Al took on another role as Territory Manager, serving customers throughout Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. He remained in that territory for the rest of his remarkable career.
More Than a Sales Representative
If you asked Al what made someone successful, he wouldn't have talked about sales numbers. He believed success came from building relationships.
Whether he was meeting with the purchasing manager of a large corporation or the owner of a one-person plumbing company working out of a garage, Al treated everyone with the same respect. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, make them feel comfortable, and genuinely listen. Those relationships became friendships. They also became one of the many reasons customers remained loyal to Spartan Tool for generations.
A Career That Built More Than Business
Working at Spartan Tool wasn't just a career for Al. It was the foundation for the life he and his wife built together. His career allowed them to raise five children, put each of them through college, and create a family they were incredibly proud of. Because Al worked days while his wife worked nights as a registered nurse, one of them was always home with their children. Later in life, that family grew to include nine grandchildren, one of Al's greatest joys.
Outside of work, he dedicated countless hours to serving his church as a lector, Eucharistic minister, Mass coordinator, and by bringing communion to hospital patients twice each month. His service to the community earned him the Medal of Honor from the Archdiocese of Baltimore, presented by the Bishop of Baltimore. Even decades after his football days ended, his 1951 high school football team was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
No matter where life took him, Al believed in serving others.
Sixty-Two Years of Dedication
In 2019, Spartan Tool honored Al with the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing the tremendous impact he had made on the company and the industry throughout his career. When he retired in 2023 after 62 years, it marked the end of one of the longest careers in Spartan Tool history.
But retirement didn't really mean goodbye. Al continued checking in with Spartan Tool, staying connected with the people he'd worked alongside for decades.
The Legacy He Left Behind
After Al retired, a simple list was found at our former Mendota office. No one remembers exactly who originally created it, but those who knew Al attributed this list to how Al lived his life.
Secrets to Happiness:
Live Beneath your means.
Stop blaming other people.
Admit when you make a mistake.
Be on time.
Don't make excuses.
Be kind to people.
Be even kinder to unkind people.
Let someone cut ahead of you in line.
Get organized.
Understand and accept that life is not always fair.
Try to go 24 hours without criticizing anyone.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
Be humble.

A company can build great equipment. But it's people like Al Lopez who help build a great company.
For 62 years, Al represented what Spartan Tool strives to be: hardworking, humble, dependable, and committed to doing right by others. His impact can still be seen in the customers he served, the coworkers he mentored, and the culture he helped create.
Thank you, Al, for your dedication, your friendship, and the example you set for all of us. You will always be a part of the Spartan Tool family.
