Spring cleaning applies to all aspects of life, from garages to pipes. With the seasons changing, the demands on sewer and drainage systems shift. From the heavy spring rains to growing roots and winter buildup, unwelcome blockages may cause havoc on your pipes. Get ahead of these problems by checking on your sewer or drain systems now!
Step 1: Inspection
This time of the year is the biggest culprit of root blockages in pipes. However, there are many other things that can also cause issues. To figure out the root cause, an inspection is necessary.
Choose from our Traveler Lite, Traveler 4.0 or other sewer inspection camera systems to conduct your investigation. Don’t forget to utilize the Spartan Vision App to take screen shots of any concerns. Create a cohesive PDF report by adding key details such as the location of the blockage.
The Solution
After determining the issue or issues within the sewer or drain system, it is time to determine the appropriate course of action. Delaying or incorrectly caring for root intrusions, buildup, or cracked pipes can lead to even bigger issues. Don’t be afraid to research a course of action to ensure the correct tools are being utilized.
Step 2: Clear Blockages
From the machines used to the attachments placed on the cable or hose, there are a variety of options when it comes to clearing blockages. The most important thing to know when choosing a machine is what size pipe the blockage is in. Cable machines have heavy-duty drums that hold durable Spartan cable and can work in pipes from 1-1/4” to 10” pipes. Hydro jetters range from the compact Cadet to larger skid and trailer jetter machines. Instead of cable, these machines use high-pressure water jetting to clear blockages.
Upon deciding which machine is best for the job, there are accessories to make the job easier specifically made for each application.
Step 3: Restore Pipes
After removing blockages and before lining, the pipe should be restored as closely to the original condition as possible with a high-speed flexible shaft machine. The Revolution line is Spartan Tool’s high-speed flexible shaft machine product line that covers all pipe sizes. While all versions are for cleaning, most can also be used for coating pipes. Only the Revolution M2.5 can be used for cleaning, coating, AND cutting applications. These also have specialty attachments that can assist in cleaning or descaling.
Step 4: Repair Pipes
Repairing the pipes is the final step in the process. Now that the blockage is gone and the pipe is restored, any cracks need to be taken care of by re-piping the line. There are a few options for repairing pipes, some requiring excavation and several versions of a non-disruptive option.
One version of the trenchless way of repairing pipes uses UV cast-in-place pipe repair technology. There are many positives besides the obvious non-dig feature including the control and efficiency offered. The UV light can be engaged whenever, allowing for ample time to position the liner. Curing is complete within 10 minutes of activating the UV light.
After cleaning and restoring your pipes, you are ready to take on spring. It helps to be prepared for all seasonal shifts and to understand what that means for your sewer and drain systems. Certain seasons, like spring, mean heavier demands on these systems. Pro tip: it’s never a bad idea for an inspection, just to ensure all is working well.
